About CERTEK, Inc.

James I. Grantham - Founder and President of CERTEK, Inc.

Mr. Grantham holds a BS degree in Agricultural Engineering from Auburn University, as well as an MS degree in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

Jim has been actively involved in air filtraton systems design including design, construction and testing of clean rooms and containment facilities for 25 years. He served on the subgroup to write the ANSI/ASME N510-1980 Standard for "Testing of Nuclear Air-Cleaning Devices." Jim acted as a committee member in the Contamination Control Standards and Practices Program for the IEST, contributing to the Standards for HEPA Filters, Adsorber Cells and Clean Room Construction. He participated on the design team for the Cancer Center Isolation Facility at Duke University (P2* and P4). Mr. Grantham is a charter member of the American Biological Safety Association, and is recognized as a Registered Biosafety Professional. He has authored two chapters in the "Anthology of Biosafety" series on BL3+ Laboratories, published by the American Biological Safety Association.

Mr. Grantham holds the patent on an instrument used for biological decontamination, as well as patents for the SAFEMOD/SAFESCAN air filtration system.

CERTEK History

CERTEK, Inc. was formed in 1977 to manufacture a patented formaldehyde generator/neutralizer, patent number 4,241,020.  The generator/neutralizer depolymerizes paraformaldehyde – a solid – into a gas, and inserts it into an enclosed airtight space.  After a user specified period of time, a neutralizing gas is inserted.  Thousands of the Model 1414 have been produced and used successfully since that time in most medical and biomedical research facilities in North America and other countries throughout the world.  Responding to user demand, additional models have been developed for larger spaces utilizing the operating parameters established with the Model 1414RH.  Major agencies use these instruments including the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Animal Disease Center, and agencies of the Government of Canada.  The instruments are used to decontaminate enclosed spaces, but CERTEK makes no warranty whatsoever concerning decontamination.  The user is advised to use "test" strips to ascertain the desired results.  (See warranty statement on the generators page).

In 1997, patent number 6,149,699 was issued for an ultra high efficiency particulate and vapor phase filter system for use in containment applications in areas where hazardous substances could be exhausted to the environment.  This system is SAFEMOD, and it is enjoying success in this market.  Due to the necessity of "scanning" the installed filter system, SAFESCAN was added in 2002.  This product has been welcomed in the Biomedical industry and has been specified for many laboratories.

At the request of Duke University Medical Center, "Quiet-Air" was developed to provide particulate free air for their Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant facility. This unit passes air from the patient room, as well as incoming air through HEPA filters, to maintain a particulate free environment for critically ill patients that are immuno-suppressed.

In 1997, CERTEK, Inc., designed and developed the concept of modular containment laboratories.  Institutions working with pathogenic organisms are required to have these type of laboratories by the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The requirements are listed in their publication "Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories".  Laboratories may also be constructed to the Canadian or World Health Organizations standards. The first laboratory was delivered in 1997 and placed on top of a five story building.  Since then through April, 2007, CERTEK has built seventeen other laboratories for use by major universities, research agencies, diagnostic laboratories, etc.  Two have been installed at the Pentagon, five have been built for the U.S. Army, and one for the Canadian Army. Laboratories are now being shipped overseas for use with the avian flu virus.

CERTEK, INC. is dedicated to serving the biomedical industry with products and services, and looks forward to accomplishing more in the future.
